Nice Shot: Cold

The little cold snap in London we went through recently was pretty harsh at times (much public transport drama) but it is nothing compared to a fantastic article over on National Geographic about Douglas Mawson's 1910 expedition to Antartica, dubbed "The Most Terrible Polar Exploration Ever"

The article is gripping and horrifically gasp-inducing. Like this bit:
Three days after [a fellow crewmate's] death, Mawson discovered to his horror that the soles of his feet had completely detached from the skin beneath them, which spurted pus and blood. He taped the dead soles to his feet, and put on six pairs of wool socks. Every step thereafter was an agony.
Yikes! Bare in mind that this point, Mawson was only about halfway through his entire ordeal. We throughly urge you read the full article. The above pic is of another expedition member- a pic of Douglas Mawson is below, commemorated on a stamp (love that etching)

Production Diaries: Number Two

Amongst all this snowmageddon/Blue Monday/worst day of the year claptrap, comes this picture from Rich who is currently working hard, hardly working in South Africa. I mean, that's nice and everything, but I know where I'd rather be, building killer snowmen:

Toilet Paper

Awesomeness stumbled upon through various internetting. The photographs all come from Toilet Paper magazine and are inspiring whilst being hyper bizarre. Definitely reminiscent of Partizan's CANADA.

Night Walking

We all knew here that Jesper's new ad for IKEA (called "Night Walkers") was great, and it seems that a lot of other people do too! Here are some of the sites it's been featured on:

David Reviews made it their headline ad and called the spot "charming" and "strangely comforting". (Subs. req'd)

Creativity Online made it an Ad of the Day, saying it was "cozy". (Dentsu America commented on the spot calling it appropriately enough "nice". Thanks, guys!)

Shots made it Shots Contender. (Subs req'd)

Imadgine of France also loved it! "Gentle and poetic" they said.

Finally, la Réclame gave it my favourite review, saying it was "le ballet nocturne", which I think means  "night ballet".

Lots of great things, I'm sure you'll agree. Not seen it yet? Why not check it out yourself:

IKEA "Night Walkers"
by Jesper Ericstam

Jesper's new one for IKEA takes a dreamy look at dealing with nocturnal upheavals. Despite being turfed out by your bed by your children/wife/cat and ending up sleeping in the dog bed/bath/car boot, it won't disturb your night's rest due to IKEA's comfy (as well as nicely patterned and probably very reasonably priced) bedwares.

The cosy feeling Jesper gets across here is lovely, aided by the Anita Harris track, with his comic touch apparent too with the dad's underwear & welly boot ensemble as well as grandad popping up at the end for breakfast.

We love it, and Creativity Online do too, naming it one of their faves.

10 Grams: Jesper

A feature on the blog where we see what our directors have been upto lately. This time, Jesper (only one pic this time but, boy: it's a doosey)

I love his description:
"From Stockholm, sauna bathing. I had to make a hole in the ice with a chainsaw"
Awesome.

Bank of Ireland "Lighthouse"
by Stuart Douglas

Stuart starts the year with his latest for Bank of Ireland. Following on his previous work for the bank, "Lighthouse" is a beautifully photographed portrait of a lighthouse keeper keeping the light shining in rough seas.

The Drum named it Ad of the Day, calling it a "lovely piece of filmmaking".
We're not sure if there are still lighthouse keepers (there could be??) and we're miles away from any coastline, but it's a nice feeling imagining there's still a bearded older man going around on a bicycle keeping the lights on.
